The Lifecycle of the Mosquito

The life of the mosquito, while short, goes through a series of changes. The mosquito lives well in heat and humidity. But it is also adept at surviving in a poorer climate. The mosquito’s life is divided into four parts, which are the eggs, the larva, the pupa, and the adult. All of which require water for its survival. That’s why it’s essential to get rid of stagnant water in your home to reduce breeding.

Eggs

The first stage occurs when the female lays eggs of 100 up to 200. Possibly more. She looks for small bodies of water or nurseries. Once she’s found the right spot, she’ll lay the eggs called rafts. They take approximately a few days to a few weeks for them to become larvae.

Larvae

Secondly, after some time and rainfall to encourage hatching, the eggs hatch. Out of the eggs swim out larvae. These hatchlings resemble small worms and are a little under 1/4th of an inch long. They have siphon tubes that allow them to hang upside from the surface of the water. Larvae eat microorganisms and organic matter floating around their nursery to survive. They remain in this stage for 14 days.

Pupa

The larvae molt four times, growing each time. After their fourth time, they develop into a cocoon to change into an adult. During this time they are not feeding, but can still move around and react to sunlight. The pupa stage only lasts a few days, depending on the climate. Hot and humid weather encourages it, while colder weather slows it down.

Adult Mosquito

After it is done with its metamorphosis, the adult emerges. The adult mosquito spends a few days on the surface of the water while its body hardens. Once it does, it flies off to feed, mate. The life of the average mosquito is only a few weeks.

This entire process goes by quickly. And it’s important to understand that this process is just for ONE mosquito. Imagine many mosquitos doing this in your home or business.
