Facts About Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are not a very likable bug. They carry possible diseases and cause itching and bumps to appear on the skin after they have feasted on your blood. Read further to learn why these insects do what they do.

Mosquito Characteristics

Mosquitoes are typically very slender insects, with the average adult only being 16 mm long and weighs just 0.04g. The size of the mosquito depends upon the larva population and food intake. The mosquito’s small body is made up of the head, thorax, and abdomen. Connected to the head is a couple of long antennas, which are indicators of smells and breeding sites.

Remarkably, the male mosquito beats their wings 450-600 times per second and can fly a distance of 20 miles or more. Although this is true, may mosquitoes like to stick close to their breeding site and usually do not fly more than a mile away.

Mosquito Larval Stage

The life cycle of mosquitoes consists of four stages. The Larval stage is the second stage from the egg. The larvae obtain oxygen through a small tube that reaches the water’s surface. Some are even capable of obtaining oxygen by fastening themselves to plants in the water.

During this cycle, the larva goes through four different molts, which shedding of the exterior in the skin to grow. The larva feeds on micro-organisms for the most part, although some mosquito’s larvae will, in fact, feed on other mosquito larva species. When the larva advances through these stages, it will then develop into a pupa.

The Pupal Stage

This stage is also referred to as the transitional stage. During this phase, the mosquito rests without eating as it prepares to transition into an adult mosquito. This stage usually ends within two days when the pupa’s outer splits open, and the adult mosquito is fully formed.

Mosquito Adult Stage

During the final stage of the life cycle of the mosquito, the insect emerges from the pupal stage. Even though the insect is an adult, it is not ready to fly. The insect has to fully develop in vegetation so that its wings and body can fully dry and stiffen.  After a few days, it is able to fly and will begin searching for nectar, which is the mosquito’s primary source of energy. The mosquito will also try to find a mate.

Once the insects have mated, the female will search for a blood meal. The female mosquito is the only part of the species that will come near humans. They need the protein in the blood to procreate.

When she penetrates the skin with the proboscis, it can transmit diseases to humans, dogs, cats, and horses. These diseases may include West Nile Virus, Malaria, Yellow Fever, Heartworm, and other illnesses.

In reality, the life cycle of mosquitoes are typically very short; males usually only survive for about two weeks while a female can survive up to a month. It takes nothing for these pesky bugs to reproduce; that is why it is so challenging to get rid of them completely.

How to Alleviate Mosquito Breeding
