The Dangers of Mosquitoes

Getting rid of mosquitoes in your home is essential to your safety. Indeed, their bite can be annoying and painful. However, the diseases mosquitoes carry are far more dangerous than their bite. Mosquitoes are active in Texas, mostly from March to October. As a result, you can expect them to ruin all your outdoor activities.

There are 176 species of mosquitoes in the United States and 85 species in Texas. It’s no wonder why they are so widespread. Mosquito-borne diseases are a big problem. Millions of people have died throughout the globe because of these deadly creatures. Fortunately, we can help eliminate that problem in your home.

Mosquitoes are effective pathogen carriers. A pathogen can be any microorganism, bacteria, or virus that is harmful to your health. What this means is that mosquitoes are perfect for spreading disease. While there are vaccines for many diseases, new diseases can still develop. Nonetheless, you don’t want to end up in a hospital. Some of the most common diseases spread by mosquitoes are the following:

  • Malaria
  • Dengue
  • West Nile Virus
  • Zika Virus
  • Chikungunya Virus
  • Wester and Eastern Equine Encephalitis
  • And much more!

A Threat To Animals and Humans

While humans are very susceptible to catching a disease from a mosquito, so are animals. There are many diseases that affect humans with mild or severe symptoms. However, many diseases hurt animals, such as dogs, cats, and livestock animals. If you live in a rural area, then please consider us.

Texan Mosquito Systems installs in a variety of homes and properties. Whether they’re commercial or residential, there is no job too big for us to handle. Many mosquitoes affect livestock animals such as goats, cows, horses, sheep, and chicken by weakening their health when they contract a virus.

For example, some mosquito-borne diseases can spread from animal to animal only. Dogs and cats can get heartworm from a disease-carrying mosquito. This is especially common if they are outdoor pets who drink out of a bowl outside, where many mosquitoes lay their eggs.

Another significant reason to consider us is the quality of your livestock. Mosquito-borne diseases have been known to cause a decrease in weight for cattle and horses. Furthermore, the quality of eggs and milk can be less than optimal when goats and chickens are bit by these annoying pests. When you call Texan Mosquito Systems, you are ensuring your animals can be mosquito-free.

The Lifecycle of the Mosquito

Mosquitoes have very short lifespans. As a result, they breed rapidly, and this can be a big problem in your home. To fully understand why you may have a mosquito infestation, it’s important to understand their lifecycle. The lifecycle of the mosquito can be divided into four parts: the egg stage, larval stage, a pupal stage, and the adult stage.

  • The Egg Stage – Female mosquitos lay eggs in clusters of anywhere from 100 to 300. She lays them in small bodies of still water. For example, gutters, trash cans, puddles, birdbaths are all excellent habitats or nurseries to lay eggs. Eggs will hatch into larvae in approximately two days. However, eggs can lay dormant during cold temperatures.
  • Larval Stage – Once they hatch, larvae will emerge. During this stage, the mosquito looks like a small aquatic worm. Larvae are very active and feed on organic matter found in their nurseries. They have siphon tubes on their back that permit them to hang upside down. Larvae molt four times and grow in size each time.
  • Pupal Stage –  After larvae molt for the fourth time, they begin to develop a cocoon-like appearance. During this stage, they undergo a metamorphosis to become an adult. They are semi-active and do not feed, but they can still move around and react to external stimuli. This process again takes two days.
  • Adult Stage – Finally, the adult emerges. Adult mosquitos are fragile and will wait on the surface of the water for their body to harden. Afterward, they fly off to feed and mate.
