As summer rapidly approaches, Texans need to be vigilant in finding ways to protect themselves from insects like mosquitoes and horseflies because they tend to run rampant during that time. These insects thrive in humid climates, and Texas is well known for its swampy summers.
However, you shouldn’t just be worried about protecting yourself. If you have horses or any other farm animal, they’d greatly benefit from our insect control services. Horseflies and mosquitoes are a great nuisance and often carry diseases that are detrimental to horses.
Mosquitoes and Horseflies are Dangerous for Your Horse
The mosquito is one of the most deadly insects in regard to the spread of disease in animals. Mosquitoes lay their eggs on top of stagnant water. Once the mosquito eggs hatch and reach maturity, they begin to search for food. Unfortunately, their nourishment of choice is obtained by penetrating human skin or the skin of animals in order to get to their blood.
Many mosquito species have the ability to transmit deadly diseases through their bite. Diseases such as Zika, Malaria, and Chikungunya are just a few of the diseases a person or animal can get from a bite. When a horse gets one of these diseases from a mosquito bite, it will experience fever and debilitating joint pain, which will negatively affect its overall health.
Similarly to mosquitoes, horseflies lay their eggs in wet areas, and their female counterparts need to feed on blood to live. Horseflies prefer large, dark-colored animals. They trace exhaled carbon dioxide to locate a blood source and use their scissor-like jaws to cut into the flesh. A horsefly’s bite is painful to humans with no other effects but can transmit diseases to horses.
Horseflies can spread a disease called Equine Infectious Anemia, which is sometimes called “Swamp Fever,” to any Equidae. This disease is very similar to the way HIV affects humans as it invades white blood cells. There is no cure for this disease, so it’s important for horse owners to ensure horseflies can’t access their stalls.
